Artist Statement
I am a passionate collector, a finder of natural treasures and beautifully crafted objects
that have been forgotten, overlooked, or cast aside. I analyze and evaluate. How does
this speak to me? Can I cleverly incorporate its essence, or the object itself, into my art?
From the breathtaking colors of an Arizona sunset to the muted shades of vintage
papers, my art is influenced by textures and patterns from the natural world, ancient
symbols, all things music, and the magical colors of the Desert Southwest. As my art
evolves, I find that it becomes easier to explore different media, materials, and
techniques.
Art has become the expressive focus of my life, filling me with the power of imaginative thinking. Whether starting with a fully formed vision, or a concept, a few simple marks, perhaps a color combination I wish to explore, my work evolves until it feels right - complete, balanced, conceivably intriguing to the viewer. I am driven by the excitement of creating something of substance, of value, from a blank substrate. No rules. No restrictions. Pure creativity.
Bio
Cheryl Goodberg is known for her award-winning collages made from artist painted papers, vintage materials, botanical elements, found and repurposed components. A conservatory trained percussionist, she brings to her art the discipline and sensitivity of her musical training. Her portfolio contains an eclectic collection of painting, assemblage, collage, and photography.
She received applied art training at The Drawing Studio, Art Institute at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Rhode Island School of Design Continuing Education, and in studio with Deanna Thibault. Influential teachers in classes and workshops include Betsy Dillard Stroud, Jane Davies, Stan Kurth, Laura Lein-Svencner, Catherine Nash, Jo Toye, and Nicholas Wilton.
In Arizona Cheryl’s work has been exhibited through Arizona Art Alliance, Tubac Center of the Arts, Community Performance & Art Center in Green Valley, Art Institute at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Contemporary Artists of Southern Arizona, PaperWorks - The Sonoran Collective for Paper and Book Artists, Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild, and at Untitled Gallery Tucson.
Cheryl Goodberg has shown around the country with the National Collage Society, at the Rochester (NY) Contemporary Art Center, Port Angeles (WA) Fine Art Center, International FL3TCH3R Exhibit, and through the Maryland Federation of Art. Her online presence includes works in shows of Artist Space Gallery, Bauhaus Prairie Art Gallery, Black Box Gallery, Fusion Art, Grey Cube Gallery, and Camelback Gallery.
